 8 inch Model 4

 Description

The original first small lathe South Bend manufactured was the Model 4. It was an 8-inch lathe and was sold from the start up, 1906. One can see it advertised in 1907 publications along with a 13-1/2-inch. In Documents from 1956, South Bend states these were the first two lathes made. South Bend built 700 lathes from 1906 to 1910 before they started stamping serial numbers into the beds. The number 4 had 1 v-way and 1 flat way. The Model 4 bed was only 4-3/16 wide edge to edge. The v way depth into the tailstock was 1/4 inch. They later developed another 8-inch lathe that had a slightly wider bed and had 2 v-ways and 2 flat ways. This lathe with improvements and revisions, became the 8-inch Junior. The earlier Model 4 lathe was still cast and sold to schools as the "build an 8-inch lathe" shop project for machine shop training. The spindle in the Model 4 was only 9-9/16 long. The spindle thread was 1-1/8-10 USF.
