S/N 11330RKLX16 Southbend heavy 10" lathe on Southbend cabinet base. I purchased this lathe used from Sobel Machinery, then in Closter, NJ in 1985. A dealer tag from Stephenson Machine Tools, a NJ dealer is still on this lathe. The bedways appear to have been either hardened or else re-ground, as there are no scraping marks anywhere on the bed. No "Flame Hardened" tag or other notation to that effect appears anywhere on the lathe. The bedways are deeply worn up close to the headstock with a heavy ridge, so I am guessing this lathe never did have hardened ways, but was reground and never rescraped. The lathe is simply a worn, loose old lathe that does a lot of work in my shop. When I got the lathe from Sobel, the headstock bearings proved to be badly worn. Sobel bought me a set of new Headstock bearings, expanders, shims and wicks from Stephenson Machine Tool, who were still in business as of May of 1985. The person I spoke to there had a record of the lathe S/N, and said she believed it was sold by them as new in 1965. IN repairing the headstock, Sobel gave me another Southbend heavy 10" spindles with better journals, so one of those was stoned and put into my lathe. The spindle bearings are set up to Southbend specifications, and the lathe turns parallel within 0.001" in about 6" despite the ridged bed. This lathe has the threaded spindle nose, as did the original spindle. This lathe had a 3 phase motor on it, but I changed it to a single phase motor when I got the lathe from Sobel. Joe
