the head stock casting looks very much like a horiz. drive in that the back is open.
There is an aluminum casting that covers the back side of the head stock.
The lid hinges on the headstock casting on the 'ears' provided for the bull gear spindle.
The end cover for the headstock is plastic (fiberglass?) and is not hinged.
